1156th -- Do What You Can

We should never let an opportunity to be helpful to pass us by. I have
found that lending a helping hand not only blesses and elevates the
recipient, but it also blesses and elevates my life as well. Knowing that
I had a small part in making a bad situation just a little bit better
encourages me to know that my life is significant and can be used to make
this world a better place. But the onus lays on me. It is my responsibility
to be available so that I may be helpful. I have to look out on purpose
to see where I may be used. Whether it is sharing a kind word, listening
to someone's problem, giving a gentle hug, sharing a friendly smile or
buying a simple gift, I can be proactive and make a difference in someone's
life. Knowing that it is so simple to change someone's day for the better,
we should accept the challenge to light a path, to share hope, to give love
and to simply treat that one that crosses our path exactly as we would like
to be treated. (Galatians 6:9-10) (Luke 6:31)

We must remember and keep in mind that to make a difference we have to
act. We have to put into motion what is in our hearts and not simply wish
our good will towards others. We have to act out our love. Love that is
not shared is love wasted. A gift not given has no meaning. A kind word
not imparted can't encourage. Hope that isn't given can't inspire.
Thinking of someone else can't envelop them. Our thoughts can't encourage
someone, inspire someone, give someone hope and let them know that they
can accomplish anything when they believe in themselves as God believes in
them, but our actions can do this and much more.
(Philippians 2:2-8) (2 Corinthians 9:6-9)

We know there is a hurting world that needs to be shown an unwavering love.
Let us be that shining beacon of hope that will lift up, encourage,
challenge and inspire this generation to be all that God has made them to
be. Let us allow our light to shine brightly so that others may see our
love and be drawn back to God who offers perfect love to all who call upon
His Name. (Matthew 5:14-16) (1 John 4:12-13)

I hope this message encourages and inspires you to do what you can when the
opportunity comes your way to make a bad situation just a little bit better.

DO WHAT YOU CAN

I was in a rush to get my power bill payment in the mail today. I pulled my
car into the post office parking lot, hopped out, and started quickly
walking towards the entrance. Then I saw something green on the sidewalk.
I looked down and saw a hummingbird laying on the concrete with her wings
spread out. She was breathing slowly in and out but not moving otherwise.
I squatted down to take a closer look. She appeared more stunned than
injured and I wondered if she had accidentally flown into the clear glass
window on the side of the building. I was sure of one thing, though. If
she stayed where she was for much longer she was either going to be
accidentally stepped on or end up as dinner for a stray cat. Taking the
tiny bird gently in my hand I lifted her up, carried her over to the green
grass, and with a few kind words lay her down.

I hoped that the camouflage of the grass would give her time to recover and
said a prayer to God for her safety. Then I left her and went into the post
office. The next day I returned and checked the area around where I had
left her. She was gone. I smiled and imagined her flying happily around
and feasting at someone’s bird feeder. It felt good knowing that even if I
hadn’t done much, I had done what I could.

So often the things we do seem so small. What we don’t realize, however,
is that every single one of them is important in the eyes of God. Do what
you can then to make this world a better place. Do what you can to share
the love within you. It can be as simple as a prayer. It can be as little
as a hug. It can be as tiny as a few coins offered to help another. It can
be as small as a kind word, a smile, or a wave. It can be as itty bitty as
helping a hummingbird off the sidewalk. In the eyes of Heaven they are all
priceless, they are all powerful, and they are all eternal. In the eyes of
God they are all beacons of the light in our souls and the love in our hearts.

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

John 15:11-13 Jesus says
“These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy
might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is My
commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love
hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Romans 12:15-18 “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that
weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but
condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of
all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with
all men.”

Galatians 6:9-10 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season
we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do
good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus declares,
“Ye are the light of the world. A city
that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and
put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all
that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may
see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Hebrews 6:10 “For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of
love, which ye have shewed toward His Name, in that ye have ministered to
the saints, and do minister.”

Colossians 3:23-25 “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord,
and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of
the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong
shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of
persons.”

All of these scriptures can be found in the King James Version Bible.
