478th -- I'll Fly Away

We as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ are to keep in mind that this life
on Earth is temporary and the troubles that come with it will one day
disappear. Many times we place so much emphasis on our physical life which
will last only for a short time and we neglect our spiritual life which
will last for all Eternity. Remember what the Bible says in 2 Corinthians
4:18 “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things
which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the
things which are not seen are Eternal.” We are to focus on our spiritual
richness and make God our top priority because we will give an account of
how we lived for Him on the Earth. (Matthew 6:30-34) (Matthew 6:19-21)

I hope you are encouraged by today's message to focus more on your eternal
destination and realize that this life is not the end of the picture.

I’LL FLY AWAY

Our tour group was in Billings, Montana, the fifth day of a 31 day tour to
Alaska, when the call came about Hazel's death. I was definitely not
prepared. How could I go on with the trip? How could I go back home to
South Georgia? Hazel was my best friend--my fellow writer/poet who shared
an area of my life no one else understood. She was the one who listened to
my troubles and prayed for me when I needed help. Lastly, she was my
sister-in-law. How could I go on without her in my life?

Our bus pulled out of Billings headed for Calgary, Alberta. As we traveled
across big sky country my heart felt as empty as the open spaces around us.
I could not hold back the tears that slipped out and rolled down my face.
The communications system on the bus was on and a video of gospel music was
playing. My attention was drawn to the screen where a lady, who looked a
lot like Hazel, was singing, “I'll Fly Away”.

She was really identifying with her music as the praises poured forth from
her mouth. She had both arms raised above her head and eyes lifted toward
the sky as if expecting to see something up above. The images in my head
begin to blur and the figure became Hazel. Many times she and I had
discussed death--mostly her death since she was many years older than I.
“Someday,” she said “I'll Fly Away to meet my Jesus and see all my loved
ones who have gone on before me. What a happy day that will be for me.
There are so many things I want to ask Jesus when I see Him. What joy it
will be when I can see my mother again.”

As I watched the figure on the screen, which had become Hazel, I seemed to
see her rise into the sky. She turned and waved good-bye to me. There was
a radiance about her face. I knew that she was happy. I knew that her long
awaited reunion was going to take place today.

Momentarily, the music changed and the lady was gone. I experienced a warm
sense of peace enveloping my body and I was happy. This was the day Hazel
had dreamed of for so long. Today she had achieved her dreams. She and I
had often talked about my going to Alaska, which was one of my dreams. She
would be so happy to know I was on my way.

We continued on to Alaska and were gone 27 more days before we returned
home. The deep sense of peace remained with me. I did not grieve for Hazel
again. Even as I returned home to the familiar surroundings that she and I
had experienced, I still felt good about her. The image I had seen on the
bus of her rising and flying away became more real to me as the days went
by. I knew she was where she wanted to be and she was happy.

I still miss her--when I have something to share or see something I think
she would be interested in, the pain is there in my heart, but that is my
pain and my loss--she has achieved her dream.

The beauties that await God’s precious children will greatly outweigh and
overshadow any of the problems that came their way on the earth. With our
finite minds, we are not capable to comprehend the complexity and detailed
beauty that God has prepared for those who love Him. (Psalm 139:1-10)

Be encouraged to trust the Lord with every area of your life and commit to
Him your spirit forsaking the lusts of this world and wait in hope for that
glorious day when He calls you Home. (2 Corinthians 7:1) (John 14:1-3)

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 “...Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them
that love Him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the
Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”

1 Peter 2:9-10 “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an Holy
nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who
hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light: Which in time
past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not
obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”

2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I
have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me at that
day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”

All of these scriptures can be found in the King James Version Bible.
